Pain Management

HYPNOTHERAPY FOR PAIN CONTROL

Hypnotherapy taps into the creative potential of the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind can aid the body’s natural ability to heal and regulate pain.

Hypnotherapy has long been used for pain control and pain relief. It may surprise many people to learn that hypnosis was used in medical surgery as an anaesthetic before chemical anaesthetics were discovered. It is rarely used for surgery today, but it is frequently used as an aid to pain relief and pain management.

It can work several levels:

  • Our experience of pain is registered in the brain. Using hypnosis it is possible to ‘turn down’ or even ‘switch off’ the specific pain receptors.

  • Our experience of pain increases the longer it has been with us. It is a known fact that over time the brain recruits more pain receptors to record a certain brain experience. It gradually ‘feels’ worse simply because more of our brain is tuning into it. Hypnotherapy can help reduce and reverse this effect.

  • With long-term or chronic pain it is difficult to avoid the habit of focusing on our pain and ‘checking out’ how it is. This in turn can set up a vicious circle. The more we focus on it the worse it seems to become. Hypnotherapy can help the brain change these habits and reduce our focus on pain.

  • It is natural to get frustrated or anxious about our pain. These emotions increase tension in our nerves and muscles which can then exacerbate the pain. The hypnotherapy teaches relaxation techniques to reduce negative emotions such as frustration and anxiety, and hence eliminate excess tension.

  • Hypnotherapy visualisation techniques can be taught which tap directly into our body’s own natural healing system. It is a proven fact that relaxation of this kind can reduce inflammation and aid healing.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY FOR PAIN CONTROL

Our experience of pain is closely related to our thoughts and perceptions about it. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy can be an effective treatment for pain control whereby the negative thought patterns can be replaced by more positive and accepting thoughts. The goal is to change the way you think about pain so that your body and mind respond better when you have pain. The therapy helps you find positive ways of coping with illness and pain.

HYPNOSIS FOR CHILDBIRTH

Hypnosis is a completely natural state of relaxed concentration. This part of our mind influences what we think, how we feel, and helps us control pain.

Pain in labour is predominantly the result of tension in your body, and tension is the result of fear of pain. By rehearsing the baby’s birth over and again in your mind, any fear of the birth becomes less and less as your mind and body become familiar with the instinctive process of birthing.

Hypnosis for childbirth teaches you how to enter into self- hypnosis instantly, and create your own natural anaesthesia whenever you need it.

As labour progresses you relax even more, go deeper inside yourself, trusting your natural ability to give birth with ease and comfort. Your mind is programmed to what you need.

The benefits of hypnosis for childbirth:

  • Reduces labour time
  • Calm, peaceful birthing experience
  • Partners have an active role during the birth
  • Fewer breech births
  • Less exhausted mother after birth
  • More rapid post-natal recovery

"Thank you so much for your hypnotherapeutic help! When I arrived the midwife didn’t believe I was in labour because I was so calm and relaxed……..incredibly short and relatively easy labour. Your help made all the difference to my pregnancy and birth experiences." EB
