There's no denying it - trying to lose weight can be a long and challenging journey. If you've ever tried and failed to lose weight before then you probably know just how frustrating it can be - especially when feelings like stress, low self-esteem and boredom crop up.

It's not unusual for people to get into a cycle of dieting, overeating, feeling guilty and dieting again. This is known as 'yo-yo dieting' and makes weight loss difficult to sustain.

Most people know that to lose weight you need to eat less and exercise more. So why do so many diets and will power alone fail? People overeat, lose control of what they eat and gain weight for many reasons as listed below.

Habit and Emotional Eating
Do you ever eat when you're not hungry? Many people from time to time eat too much of the wrong types of food. Some people cannot help doing this because food represents more than just food to them. Eating only when you're hungry makes sense on an intellectual level but many of eating habits are driven by our emotions, and this has become immersed in our unconscious mind, so many people do not realise or recognise why they are eating when not hungry. It then has also become a powerful habit which can be difficult to break with diets and will power alone. For many of us, food is a reward for doing something good, a comfort when we're feeling bad or even something to do when we're bored.

People often turn to food when they feel:

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Anger
  • Boredom
  • Loneliness
  • Frustration
  • Anxiety

For many of us, reaching for our favourite foods is an automatic response when we don't feel good about ourselves. Changing that automatic response isn't easy but, if you want to learn how to control your calories to lose weight or get healthy, it's worth the time and effort to figure out what's behind your emotional eating habits. There is a need to identify why you are overeating and change the outdated beliefs in your unconscious mind which are currently controlling your eating habits, and change them to positive, supportive beliefs which can help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Vicious Circle If you have been dieting on and off for years it can really negatively impact your emotional well being. If this is you, you are likely to be in a vicious circle which is difficult to break. You start dieting and lose some weight. Sometime later you start to return to normal eating habits. You feel guilty and beat yourself up for not achieving your goal. You tell yourself you have failed once again. For comfort you eat your favourite food to feel better. You then start to become obsessed about food and have lowered your self esteem along the way, making it even harder to lose weight
